BlueQuoll launches Mr. Wolf and the Ginger Cupcakes LITE app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

BlueQuoll, a new children’s book App publisher based in Brisbane, Australia, has launched the LITE version of Mr. Wolf and the Ginger Cupcakes, a charming children’s book App for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad for children ages 4 and up based on the traditional tale of the Little Red Riding Hood. It’ll be available on the App Store starting June 1, 2011. The LITE version is free to download and introduces the first ten pages of the full digital storybook.

Mr Wolf and the ginger Cupcakes captures the charm of a traditional children’s book thanks to its exquisite hand crafted illustrations and transports the readers in a whimsical world where all sorts of funky characters cohabit in harmony at the sound of dreamy jazz music.

Mr. Wolf and the Ginger Cupcakes features 32 hand painted illustrations, created using watercolors and colored pencils, carefully digitized to make sure each page maintained a painterly feel on the screens of the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Mr. Wolf and the Ginger Cupcakes is a universal App specifically coded to display flawlessly on any iDevice. It is multilingual in a very proactive way. Recently Mr. Wolf has been featured in a couple of websites specializing in storybook App reviews and they have said very nice things about Mr. Wolf and the Ginger Cupcakes!

This digital book is adorable, with a humorous take on a familiar story that is nicely narrated with music and beautiful illustrations. The tale is not animated or interactive, but it makes up for this with lots of charm. It's even a great bedtime read. It features lots of easy to navigate settings and is also solidly made. The font is quirky, with a hand-drawn look that suits the pictures beautifully, but could be difficult for some younger readers. Otherwise, it is perfect, becoming our favorite digital 'red riding hood' story. Highly recommended. You can read the full review at www.digitalstorytime.com

WHAT if Little Red Riding Hood had a scooter to get to Grandma's house? And how would the fairytale end if Mr Wolf was a vegetarian?

A more modern version of the children's story has been written by Brisbane couple Vincenzo Pignatelli and Lucia Masciullo and to ensure the classic tale appeals to tech-savvy, 21st century children it has been created in digital form only.

With the sounds of birds chirping and against a backdrop of watercolour paintings and pencil drawings of forests Mr Wolf and the Ginger Cupcakes can either be read independently or narrated and watched on an iPhone, iPad or iPad Touch.

In the story, an entomologist takes the place of the lumberjack, a game of chess replaces Mr Wolf's attempted assault and the whole cast end up at the home of little "Red-hood" for dinner, her mum cooking a fresh batch of ginger cupcakes.

One screen tap and Brisbane drama teacher Nicky Peelgrane narrates the story. A swipe and independent readers can turn pages themselves. Another touch and switch to Italian, Spanish, Japanese or Chinese.

Pignatelli, a neuroscientist seeking a more creative career, and Masciullo, a biologist with a love of illustrating children's books, are from Taranto in the south of Italy. They moved to Brisbane four years ago when he accepted a research post at the University of Queensland but they have now applied for permanent residency.

Masciullo has already had illustrations published in four children's books in Australia, with Family Forest shortlisted for the 2011 Children's Book Council of Australia picture book award. Pignatelli set up Brisbane's first children's book digital publisher, BlueQuoll, and co-wrote Mr Wolf and the Ginger Cupcakes.

This is the first in a series of videos showcasing the backstage of the development of our first children story for iPad and iPhone.

The title of the Children's App is "Mr Wolf and the Ginger Cupcakes" and it is a fun take on the classic tale of The Little Red Riding Hood. In this episode we show a brief speed painting showing illustrator Lucia Masciullo creating one of the illustrations used for the full story.

Lucia is painting using watercolors and pastels and the whole thing took more than two hours. Lucia is painting the Enomologist, one of the unusual characters of the story, overhearing the menacing voice of MrWolf coming from poor Grandma's Cottage. Enjoy
